Task 5

Update your Event Diary with your own ideas, resources and activities and reflections which you would like to share with all of us. Prepare descriptions of two short activities connecting to two different modules from this LE. It should be sth you would like to work on with your pupils showing the applications of Maths.
  1. My students developed their astronomical knowledge while improving mathematical skills. The children had the opportunity to recall the information about the Solar System and learn new interesting facts about the planets. Working in groups, students filled out work cards by coloring the drawings of the planet and solving puzzles about them. During the classes, we used  materials from the "Know your planets" (educational activities of the Space Awareness project) and the Our Wonderful Universe course organized by the European Schoolnet Academy. Students could compare the sizes of individual planets and size of planets with the size of the Sun. The attraction was the comparison of the size of the planets of our system on the example of fruits: watermelon, grapefruit, apples, lemons, cocktail tomatoes, blueberries and peppercorns. The children calculated the length of the diameters of individual planets. They had the opportunity to learn the true distance between planets and the Sun using the astronomical unit (AU). They have become aware of the cosmic distances and size of the planets by watching the material about creating a Solar System model on a scale in the Nevada desert in the USA. It was also a great opportunity to advertise the Polish Izerski Park of the Dark Sky and the planetary path that begins at the hostel in Orle in the Jizera Mountains.
  2.  My students had to prepare the plan of the trip to four of european cities.  Then they had to determine using the maps and scale how many kilometers they will travel during the journey. Later they have to calculate the cost of travel, e.g. the cost of fuel used or the price of tickets. They had to decide what objects they will visit. They had to find ticket prices and calculate the cost of visiting all the objects. When traveling, you need to eat something, so the students have estimated the cost of meals. They had to choose hotels and calculate the cost of accommodation. The result of the work were presentations with the route of the trip and a summary of all costs.
